Poroszló – the home of nature tourism
Poroszló is an ancient settlement located on the right bank of the River Tisza. It is even mentioned by Anonymus, who recorded that the conquering Hungarian troops of Árpád camped here, beneath the Poroszló earthwork. The village was granted market town status in 1445. During the Ottoman period, the local monastery was destroyed and the Árpád-era church was dismantled; however, in its place, the Reformed Church (1793) and the Catholic Church (1797), both still standing and in use today, were later built.
The town hall is also a historic building located in the center of the village. The Graefl family’s castle—another jewel of the settlement—has been renovated and now welcomes guests. In 2012, the Tisza Lake Ecocentre was established, housing Europe’s largest freshwater aquarium system. Poroszló is also home to several thousand-year-old oak trees. The village museum (Tájház) presents traditional rural life and crafts in an authentic thatched-roof peasant house.
One of the main attractions of the settlement is Lake Tisza, covering 127 km², which offers excellent recreational opportunities for lovers of water sports, swimming, beach activities, fishing, hunting, water tours, and eco-tourism.
The Lake Tisza Bird Reserve, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, can be visited through organized tours departing from local harbors. On the alkaline grasslands near Poroszló, horseback riding is still possible today, while visitors can also observe the rare great bustard population.
For those seeking relaxation, an increasing number of rural guesthouses, pensions, quality restaurants, and marinas provide comfort and hospitality. Poroszló is also an attractive destination in winter, offering opportunities for ice skating, sledding, and—most notably—ice fishing.
